“This handsome tree was a very large solitary banksia nestled in the centre of a casuarina grove. The grove existi and growing in a shallow layer of soil in a flat area on the sheet granite at Lillian Stokes rocks in the Frank Hann National Park.
Over many years I have repeatedly visited the Park. As soon as the car stopped I would go straight to this banksia and walk around and talk to it. It was just so very special.
In 2018 I made many detailed field drawings intending to one day paint it. In spring 2019, on arrival I walked over and was surprised and very upset to see it completely dead. I said to the tree,
“I’ll have to complete the painting I started to continue your life.”
It was a great sadness to find it dead.
This painting - a homage to a glorious tree. It’s bid for eternity.”
Painted in mid-2020.
